About YAML to JSON Converter

YAML and JSON are closely related data formats: since YAML 1.2, YAML is a strict superset of JSON, so any valid JSON document is also valid YAML. This converter lets you move between the two without losing data, translating YAML's indentation-based blocks into JSON's braces and brackets and back again. It is especially handy when you receive a YAML config file but your pipeline, API, or database expects JSON.

Use YAML when humans will hand-edit the file, such as Kubernetes manifests, CI/CD pipelines, or Docker Compose, and use JSON when machines exchange data over HTTP or store it in documents. When converting, watch for YAML-only features that cannot round-trip: anchors and aliases are not representable in JSON, and YAML's type inference can turn unquoted values like yes, on, or 0123 into booleans or numbers. Quote strings explicitly to keep them as text.

What the converter preserves

YAML is a superset of JSON, so JSON converts to YAML without loss, but the reverse is not always true. This converter handles anchors and aliases, multiple documents in a single stream, flow style, and custom tags, and will tell you when a construct has no JSON equivalent rather than silently dropping it.

Comments are the common exception: JSON has no comment syntax, so YAML comments are removed during conversion. If you are round-tripping a file and need them preserved, keep the YAML as the source of truth.

When YAML is the wrong format

YAML's indentation-based syntax is forgiving to write and easy to break in ways JSON is not — a single misaligned list marker changes the structure rather than failing to parse. For machine-to-machine interchange where either side can read JSON, JSON is the safer contract.

For Kubernetes manifests, keep YAML as the authored source and convert to JSON only when talking to an API that requires it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert YAML to JSON?
Select YAML or JSON as the input type, paste your content, and click Convert. The tool detects the format automatically and converts to the other format. It handles anchors, aliases, multi-document YAML (---), and all standard YAML types including dates and timestamps. Click Convert again to convert back.
Does it preserve data types?
Yes. YAML types like integers, floats, booleans, null, and dates are converted to their JSON equivalents. Strings remain strings. Anchors and aliases are resolved automatically so the output is always clean JSON.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. Every tool on jsonversal runs entirely in your browser using the Web Crypto API, File API, and Clipboard API. Nothing is ever uploaded — not even the JSON you paste in.
Do I need an account or API key?
No signup, no email, no API key. All tools are free to use with no signup required.
Can I use these tools offline?
Yes. Once the page loads, all tools work offline. There are no external API calls or CDN dependencies at runtime.
